A common approach to language

The terminology we use is frequently confused and confusing.

Inconsistency between existing frameworks over definition and distinction between outcomes and indicators and how to refer to the means by which these are gauged or measured.

Wider common outcomes movement is striving for consistency, using the following definitions (which have been applied to this family hubs work):

  • Outcomes overarching states or conditions to be achieved for all babies, children and young people = safe, healthy, happy etc..

  • Indicators: these suggest that an outcome has been achieved or is being achieved

  • Metric: how an indicator is measured

  • Measurement tool: the means by which some metrics are captured and reported
